- They identify user needs, set up computer databases, and test systems. They ensure that systems perform as they should and add people to the system as needed.

- The database approach incorporates the following principles:
- data remains consistent across the database;
- data is clearly defined;
- users access data concurrently, in a form that suits their needs;
- there is provision for data security and recovery control (all data is retrievable in an emergency).
Working Hours:
- Working hours typically include regular unsocial hours.
- Overnight and weekend work is often necessary as maintenance and development work needs to be undertaken during periods of low usage.
- Often on call if a critical problem occurs.
